Fellowships

Fellowships are available for Goucher students, alumnae/i and visiting scholars:

The Jane Austen Scholar-in-Residence Program supports travel research fellowships to promote scholarship related to eighteenth-century studies using the Alberta Hirshheimer Burke-Jane Austen Collection at Goucher College.
The Magnuson Fund for Creative Partnerships provides financial support to members of the Goucher community for collaborative projects involving the Library.
The Mears Fellowship is open to alumnae/i pursuing a career in Library and Information Science.
Peirce Fellowships, supported through the Peirce Center, are open to current Goucher students.

Happy National Poetry Month! Did you know that there are more than 50 forms of poetry, and that the form of literature has continuously evolved overtime? Poetry predates all written text, and was once performed through singing or spoken word. Here are 5 collections of different forms of poetry, including haiku, sonnet, visual poetry, poetry memoir and elegy.

In 1929, the Elite Giants joined the Negro National League. Beginning in Nashville, the team moved to Detroit, Columbus, and DC before settling on the east side of Baltimore in May 1938. Later, the team moved to south Baltimore's Westport Ball park.

The patriarchal systems connected to the arts have held women back and hindered their success in all history. Female inventors are among this group, with patent offices being more likely to reject patents with women as sole applicants and only 10% of patent holders in 2018 being female. It is with heavy hearts that we post in memory of Bluma Shapiro, Holocaust survivor and long-time Baltimore resident. Goucher librarians were lucky enough to interview Bluma in 2009 about her life before, during and after World War II. Her strength and wisdom inspired and bettered everyone around her. She will be deeply missed.

Did you know that the first known author is a woman named Enheduanna from 23rd century BCE ancient Mesopotamia? That’s right. The first known author was a woman! Since then, women have continued to write and publish their works, with the first published American women being Anne Bradstreet in 1650. Today, we know legendary authors such as Jane Austen, Alice Walker, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Jenny Han. It wasn’t until the 19th century that women’s rights in education began increasing, and then in 1972, the United States passed Title IX, now protecting women from gender-based discrimination in education. Women like Alice Palmer, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Lucy Diggs Slowe helped pave the way for girls to learn and teach, regardless of race, ability or class. Today for National Poetry Month, we honor poets of color around the world. The poets of the past have paved the way and broken ceilings for today’s modern poets. Phillis Wheatley was sold into slavery from West Africa, and was the first African-American woman to publish a book of poetry. Amanda Gordan is the youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history, the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate, and is the first poet to appear on a Vogue cover. These women are just two examples of many poets of color who have made history and persevered through any challenges they faced when creating or publishing their art.
